The Transcantabrico route is a journey on one of the most important luxury trains in the world. The route can start in Santiago de Compostela or San Sebastián, with outbound and return itineraries, passing through some of the most impressive landscapes and the most representative cities of the different communities it crosses.

During the journey, you will enjoy panoramic views of the Galician, Asturian, Cantabrian, and Basque coasts, and as natural beauties of the route, we highlight the Picos de Europa that are present along part of the route. You will also visit historic cities such as Santiago de Compostela, Oviedo, Gijón, Santander, and Bilbao, where you can explore their rich history and culture.

We have all the information about the departures for 2024 and 2025, always with routes through northern Spain. In 2024, we offer options with departures from Santiago de Compostela to San Sebastián or San Sebastián to Santiago de Compostela for 8 days, and the shorter route of 4 days from Santiago de Compostela to Gijón.

And in 2025, we have routes from Santiago de Compostela to San Sebastián, San Sebastián to Santiago de Compostela, León to Santiago de Compostela, Santiago de Compostela to León, all 8 days long, and two shorter 4-day routes from Oviedo to San Sebastián, Santiago de Compostela to Gijón.

In 2024, there is also a four-day option from Santiago de Compostela to Gijón.

In 2025, there are options from San Sebastián to Santiago de Compostela or Santiago de Compostela to San Sebastián, León to Santiago de Compostela or from Santiago de Compostela to León, and two four-day options from Oviedo to San Sebastián or Santiago de Compostela to Gijón.

World Heritage Sites along the Transcantabrico route

Puente Vizcaya (Bilbao – Vasco Country)

This monumental transporter bridge crosses the Nervión River, designed by the Biscayan architect Alberto de Palacio y Elissague. The bridge, 45 meters high and 160 meters long, was completed in 1893. Made with the traditional metal construction techniques of the 19th century, it holds the distinction of being the world’s first bridge to simultaneously allow the passage of boats and the transport of passengers and vehicles from one side to the other. It served as a model for the construction of other bridges in Europe, Africa, and America. It is considered a magnificent work of the industrial revolution in metal architecture. The UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 2006.

Altamira Cave and Paleolithic Cave Art of Northern Spain (Altamira Cave Museum) 8-day and 4-day Itineraries

Due to its historical and artistic value and with the purpose of its conservation in the best state, access to the Altamira Cave has been prohibited to visitors for several years, restricted only to scientists and for research purposes.

A short distance from the original cave, the Altamira Cave Museum (Neocueva de Altamira) was created to allow visitors to experience it. It is a rigorously accurate three-dimensional reproduction of how it was between 35,000 and 13,000 years ago when it was inhabited by the societies of the time, hunters and gatherers, and showcases the beauty of the cave art represented there.

In 1985, the Altamira Cave was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao) 8-day and 4-day Itineraries

It is a museum of contemporary art designed by the Canadian architect Frank O. Gehry, inaugurated in 1997. Its most striking feature is the innovative building it occupies, consisting of curved and twisted forms, covered with limestone, glass curtains, and titanium sheets. It is one of the most ambitious cultural projects of the 20th century and has brought renown to the city of Bilbao.

The Guggenheim Museum houses its own unique collection and is complemented by collections from other Guggenheim institutions.

The Capricho de Gaudí (Comillas – Cantabria) 8-day Itineraries

The Villa Quijano, popularly known as El Capricho, is a modernist building located in the town of Comillas, Cantabria. It was designed by Antoni Gaudí and built between 1883 and 1885, making it one of the few works by Gaudí outside of Catalonia. The building belongs to Gaudí’s Orientalist period. It was declared a Cultural Heritage Site in 1969, restored in 1988, and converted into a museum in 2009.

Covadonga Sanctuary (Asturias) 8-day and 4-day Itineraries

The basilica, built in Neo-Romanesque style, is located next to the cave where the image of the Santina (the Virgin of Covadonga) is venerated, a place of worship and pilgrimage. The two tall towers flanking the main entrance stand out, and inside the basilica, there is an altar with a gold panel representing the Battle of Covadonga, as well as the tombs of King Pelayo and Alfonso I.
